Minimally Invasive Surgery:
Laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery is a
surgical technique by which the surgeon makes small incisions in the
abdomen to perform surgery. Narrow instruments are used along with a tiny
camera to allow the surgeon to see inside the patient's abdomen. Many
procedures can be performed laparoscopically, including gall bladder,
esophageal surgery, colon surgery, and surgery on the stomach. In many
cases, patients are able to recover from laparoscopic surgery much more
quickly than traditional procedures requiring a large incision. You should
discuss with your physician whether or not your particular surgery can be
done laparoscopically.
